Purchasing new clothes can be thrilling and exciting.

You may want to wear that cool outfit right out of the store. But you may want to decide against it.

A dermatologist urges people to wash their new clothes so they you don’t develop issues like skin irritation, scabies, lice, or even fungus, the Daily Mail reported.

Speaking on the Today show, Donald Belsito, a professor of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Centre said on some occasions lice and scabies were “possibly transmitted from trying on in the store.”

The person who tried the outfit before you may have has these issues. Store-bought clothes can also contain various harmful chemicals bad for the skin.

“When clothes are shipped, they’re also kept with some preservatives so that mould won’t grow on them during the shipping process if there’s moisture,” dermatologist Lindsey Bordone from Columbia University Medical Center, told Self.

A chemical called formaldehyde resins used in garments can cause severe reactions like eczema. Dyes can also cause allergic reactions.

So don’t forget to give your new clothes a good wash before you show off your new look.
