What is Karma?

by Karmaguru Sumant Sumeet Kaul

Karma means action. The real meaning of Karma is not Fate because Karma is Action. This action starts with your thoughts; it is more than simple action because it is not just physical action. It is not unconscious action but intentional, conscious, deliberate, willful action.

WHY BECAUSE ONE DOES IT DESPITE SOMETIMES KNOWING THE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES OF THE ACTION WE ARE GOING TO TAKE.

At least many times people on Mindful Path are able to know. So when we know the consequence of our Action and yet not manage, does it not become DELIBERATE? Every action must have a reaction, an effect.

The great physicist Newton formulated the law, which states that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction just like the law that every intentional, willful action must have its effect. It is when we speak of intentional action together with its effect or fruit that we speak of the Law of Karma. In its most basic sense, the Law of Karma teaches that similar actions will lead to similar results. Let us take an example. If we plant a guava seed, the plant that springs up will be a guava tree, and eventually it will bear a guava fruit. Alternatively, if we plant a poppy seed [opium seed] the plant that will spring up will be opium which can be used as intoxicant or medicine depending upon who is growing it. As one sows, so shall one reap? According to one’s action, so shall be the fruit. Similarly, in the Law of Karma, if we do a wholesome action i.e. a positive action, eventually we will get a positive or wholesome fruit, and if we do a negative action or unwholesome action eventually we will get an unwholesome, painful result. This is what we mean when we say that causes bring about effects that are similar to the causes. i.e. It Will Bring Similar Effects Of Similar Vibrations This we will see very clearly when we come to specific examples of wholesome and unwholesome actions.
