Emotional build up and Disease

by P Vaidyanathan

We get sick or fall ill from various causes—genetic causes, injuries, infections. atmospheric pollution, life style diseases etc. Every disease has a known or unknown cause. But what is important to know is that although all of us are exposed to a whole lot of diseases, very few of us actually fall sick. That is often related to our basic state of health and immunity, which keep us protected. Health is not just about the body. Nowadays, even medical science has come to accept that health is often a combination of body, mind, emotions and even spirit.

Human beings are all prone to get both negative and positive thoughts, all day long. And each of these positive or negative thoughts often triggers in us a corresponding positive or negative emotion. The positive thoughts trigger joy, happiness, contentment, relaxation, peace and harmony, while the negative ones trigger anger, fear, greed, lust, grief, worry, anxiety or frustration. As a race, we tend to gravitate more towards negative thoughts and can sustain negative thoughts and emotions for long periods of time, from minutes, to hours, to days, weeks, months and even years. Conversely, positive emotions seem to have a very short shelf life, and after feeling good or happy for some time, some nagging thought crops up, and triggers one of the negative emotions. We often find it very easy to main tain a sustained negative emotional state, than a positive one.

It had been my observation that as we get negative thoughts / emotions, we tend to ignore them. stuff them inside, distract ourselves, tell ourselves its ok, basically we avoid facing them head on ..and they grow and grow. When the amount of negative energy in our mind-body reaches a critical level, we attract disease. We all get angry sad jealous, greedy, fearful, frustrated depressed…that’s normal human behavior. …but we are at a loss as to what to do with those emotions. Very often, we can’t do much. .if we are angry with someone, and especially if that someone happens to be our boss or mother in law or parent of spouse or a close friend, we can’t always scream at those we are angry with, for three hours and decompress to some extent. So, the anger emotion that has been produced is normal, but that anger finds no outlet. It gets collected in our emotional body, and later on, overflows into our physical body One episode of a negative emotion will not produce disease, but as we keep gathering more and more negative energy into our systems, these emotions often reach a critical point, which is different for different people. And when that critical point or threshold is reached, that negative energy settles down into a joint, or bone, or muscle or organ system, and produces dysfunction, which is disease. The high negative charge we hold also makes it easy for germs to enter and breach our immunity barrier, and hence it is frequently seen that even in an epidemic, those who are stressed are more likely to catch the infection. than someone who is mentally strong and stable.

Emotions, especially the negative ones, cannot be avoided. Human beings will produce emotions, for we are geared and built that way. What we need to do, is to pay attention, accept and acknowledge them, and then process our emotions. We can let off some steam on others, but that would still be like the pressure cooker, letting off only ten percent steam, to remain comfortable. In order to completely decompress and release all our negativity, we need to sit every day, for variable periods of time, in one place and feel all our emotions completely. As you sit down in silence, don’t avoid your emotions, let them come on, don’t distract yourself with other thoughts, don’t argue with yourself or justify or rationalize, and don’t turn to music or television…just sit in one place and feel your anger, or sorrow, or angst or grief and let the energy of the emotions overtake you and fill you completely.. let it flow through you…and let it dissipate itself, so that it is gone, once and for all. .and we are free of the negativity. If a room is filled with smoke, we have to open the doors and windows and let the smoke go. Shutting up the door and windows and ignoring the smoke will only suffocate us more.

We have all been taught to suppress, and rarely to express. Expression is the starting point, but we not only need to express, we also need to sit and process our emotions, so that we have heard them, we have felt them, we have understood them, and then and only then can we release them permanently, and be on our way to good health
