Sewa is Effortless Service

True Sewa

The moment you become a good human being, the moment you start following spiritual laws, whatever be your output, it will be beautiful. You don’t have to work on your skills, separately. Once you start working on yourself whatever you do comes out beautiful, it will just flow and touch everyone who sees it.

Opportunities To Serve

It Is Always Aound You don’t have to go anywhere to do sewa or self-less service. It is we who have created these artificial compartments that here we will do sewa and there we will work. You don’t have to look for an ashram or an orphanage to do sewa. Why must you label any particular kind of activity as sewa? Divine always surrounds you with 2-3 people at any given time whom you can serve selflessly. Serving someone who is unwell at home, running errands for the elderly in the neighbourhood, helping your mother-in-law or father-in-law in their daily chores, this too is sewa. Taking care of people who work for you, your maid or driver, when you see they are not feeling well, helping them in time of need — that too is sewa. Making a cup of tea for your maid because she looks unwell is far more meaningful sewa than looking for orphanages to feed the children there. In fact, you should be happy that Divine has given you an opportunity to do sewa at home and you don’t have to go anywhere to do it.

Your Duty Karm

It is pointless do form clubs to help elderly in the old-age homes, while your mother-in-law is sitting hungry at home. And even you may be doing this kind of sewa thinking you will get a lot of punya, this means you are thinking in terms of religion. Such sewa will not lead to your own growth. Besides, to serve people around you is also your duty karm.

Sewa is very essential. It is a spiritual law, what goes around comes around. If you do sewa, serve others selflessly, in your time of need, help will reach you too from one quarter or the other, for sure.

It Helps You Grow

How does sewa help in growth? See for yourself, when you serve others selflessly, you feel light, you feel good. You are able to lighten the burdens of your sub-conscious mind. When you are working on your growth, you are bound to come across many hurdles, may be in form of depression or sadness, in such times you will get someone to support you, stand by you, make you feel good, and help you tide over the problem so that you can continue moving towards growth. This is the way the circle of sewa moves.

Insurance Policy

When you give someone this feeling that someone is there to help them, take care for them, support them, you too will get that kind of support – someone will make you feel you belong – in time of need, because you have earned the ‘saubhagya nidhi’ of life, you have created a good-fortune fund – insurance for life, already. Sewa is an insurance.

Do It Effortlessly

It is not just about installing free drinking water stalls. Do only as much as you can do effortlessly. If you put too much effort in the sewa, in you will rise expectations, in you will rise a sense of doership, and also ego that you have given so help. This will nullify whatever good fortune you have earned.

It could be as effortless as pickup someone’s used plate in the office canteen, and leaving it the washbasin to be cleaned, if he has forgotten to pick it up himself. This way you are not serving the fellow who was using that plate, but the canteen boy who would have to make an extra round to come pick up the plate. You don’t have to go looking for opportunities to do sewa, they are always present. Just look around. Once you get into this habit, it becomes part of your system.

No Need For Display

We don’t go into the subtlety of sewa. We want to show or display our sewa, we want to tell the whole world we are doing sewa – that we are donating four blankets to the poor or offering 10 kilos of wheat flour to the orphanage. What is this? When people do sewa in the name of religion, offering huge amounts of money to do abhikshekam of the idols in temples, they are only trying to show off their wealth, intoxicated by their wealth they are trying to show how much they can do, it is only to boost their ego, it does not lead to anyone’s spiritual growth. It is only about making a name for themselves in society. Religion should be totally wiped out of human psyche. It is doing more harm than good.
