Sit down to drink water, here’s what Ayurveda says

Why do people often tell you to sit down before drinking water? What happens if you drink when you are in a standing position? Let’s see what Ayurveda says.

It is natural

Nature knows what is best for us. The majority of diseases today happen because we adamantly try to go against nature. And, nature intended us to be in a sitting position to drink water. Observe nature. Many people cite the example of cows, elephants or goats that stand up to drink water. It is simply wrong, we humans share our anatomy with the great primates. Observe the apes such as chimpanzee, gorillas, and orangutans – they all sit down to drink water. Take one step closer to nature, even if it is a simple thing like to sitting down while drinking water.

Sitting down satisfies your thirst better

Water is very essential for the body. A person can survive many days without food, but without water, the chances of survival reduce drastically. About 70% of the body is water. If the amount of water in the body reduces even by 1%, we feel thirst. When you sit down to drink water, your brain gets a clear signal that the requirement for water has been fulfilled. Try it out yourself. Next time you feel thirsty, sit down and drink at a normal pace. You will experience that your thirst has been quenched better.

Your digestion remains strong

The shape of the digestive system does not change much whether you are seated or in a standing position, but how fast you drink water definitely changes. I have observed that people who are in a hurry, often drink water in gulps, very fast. This washes away all of the digestive juices and weakens Agni. The process of digestion takes 8 hours to complete, so at any given time, the process is going on in your intestines. If you sit down to drink water, there is a good chance that you will drink water at a normal speed and the digestive juices will not be washed away.

Sitting down to drink water also has other benefits such as keeping your joints free from pain and stiffness and keeping your kidneys healthy. Next time you feel thirsty, take a seat and then take a sip.
